Play Word Tiles online and turn your letter rack into a crossword of scoring opportunities. This free browser-based word game lets you build words on a 15×15 board, connect new plays to existing letters, and compete against Word Bot. Each letter has a value, and selected board squares can multiply your score.

Your rack changes as you play, so every turn calls for a new decision. You might use a high-value letter to earn more points, connect a short word to an existing line, or save useful letters for a stronger play. The aim is not simply to make a long word, but to find a legal placement that scores well and leaves you in a good position for the next turn.

How to Play Word Tiles

Start with seven letter tiles and use them to create connected words on the board. Your opening word must cross the centre square. After that, each new play must connect to at least one letter already on the board.

  1. Review your letters. Look for familiar word patterns, useful endings, and combinations that use several tiles efficiently.
  2. Place a word. Drag tiles from your rack onto the board, or use the game’s tile-selection controls to arrange your letters in a straight line.
  3. Check the crossings. Make sure the main word and any additional words formed by your placement are valid.
  4. Submit your move. Select Play to validate the word and add the accepted score to your total.
  5. Prepare for the next turn. Draw replacement tiles when available, then plan your next move against the developing board.

Example: If your rack contains C, A, T, R, E, S and P, you could look for words such as CARE, PAST or TRACE, depending on the available board letters and spaces. A word is only playable if it fits legally and every word created by the placement is accepted.

How Scoring Works

Each letter contributes its assigned point value to an accepted play. The value of a move can increase when a newly placed tile lands on a premium square. If your placement creates additional valid words across or down, those words can also contribute to the total.

  • Letter bonuses: Double-letter and triple-letter squares multiply the eligible value of a tile.
  • Word bonuses: Double-word and triple-word squares multiply the eligible word score.
  • Crossing words: One placement may create more than one valid word, giving you additional scoring opportunities.
  • Seven-tile bonus: Playing all seven tiles from your rack in one turn earns an additional 50 points.

Scoring tip: A long word is not always the best move. A shorter word that places a valuable letter on a triple-letter square or creates useful crossing words may earn more. Check the board before committing your tiles.

Make Better Moves on the Board

Good Word Tiles play combines vocabulary with careful use of the board. These practical habits can help you make more of each rack.

  • Look beyond word length. Compare the points available from different placements, including any premium squares.
  • Use existing letters. A word can connect to letters already on the board, allowing you to form a longer word without supplying every letter from your rack.
  • Keep your rack balanced. A useful mix of vowels and consonants generally gives you more options on the next turn.
  • Handle difficult letters early. If Q, X or Z is restricting your options, look for a legal play that uses it effectively rather than holding it indefinitely.
  • Watch the spaces you open. A move can score well but also give Word Bot access to a premium square. Consider the opponent’s likely response before choosing a placement.

Using the Game Controls

The available controls let you reconsider a placement or change your rack when you cannot find a suitable word.

  • Undo: Remove a placement before submitting the move so you can try another arrangement.
  • Shuffle: Rearrange your rack to help you spot combinations you may have overlooked.
  • Exchange: Replace selected tiles when the rules allow it. An exchange scores no points and uses your turn, so consider whether the new letters are worth the lost scoring opportunity.
  • Pass: End your turn without playing a word when necessary.
  • Lifeline: Use one of the game’s 10 lifelines to receive help finding a playable move.

Before selecting Play, check the spelling, the direction of the word, and any smaller words created by crossing letters. Even a valid main word can be rejected if another word formed by the same move is not accepted by the game’s dictionary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Word Tiles free to play online?

Yes. You can play directly in your browser using the interactive board, letter rack and game controls, without needing a physical set of tiles.

How many tiles can I use in one turn?

Your rack holds up to seven tiles. You can use some or all of them in a play, and using all seven in one turn earns a 50-point bonus.

Can I place words in any direction?

Words must run in a straight horizontal or vertical line. Your first word must cross the centre square, and subsequent plays must connect to letters already on the board.

Why was my word rejected?

The word may not be in the game’s dictionary, or your placement may have created another invalid word. Check every horizontal and vertical word formed by the new tiles.

What happens when the game ends?

The game can end when a player uses all their tiles after the bag is empty or when six consecutive turns score no points. Remaining tile values are then handled according to the game’s end-of-match scoring rules.
